  1. Don't ban the chit chat!

Allow the time for chit-chat during meetings

Before in-person meetings usually commence there is always talk amongst the team, sometimes personal sometimes work related. Nevertheless conversation flows. This doesn't have to stop just because we are all behind screens!

Allow for the before/after chit-chat, even encourage it by kicking things off with asking how everyone is, allow your team to spend extra time discussing their current life or work crisis and watch how it relaxes and uplifts the group.

2. Use cameras and video chats over phonecalls

The time for video chat is now!

Whilst it may be tempted to merge those calls when you have an impromptu phone call, video calls/video meetings naturally make people feel more connected. There is also less room for miscommunications as without body language (coupled with tone of voice) there is always the chance a team member can misunderstand your intended message.

Embrace the possibility of an unwanted 2 feet tall guest, or the noise distraction from the kitchen in the background and reap the rewards of video.

3. Create a group chat

One can never have too many...

Whether it's WhatsApp or Slack or any other form of messenger, your team are able to continue to feel connected with each other, keeping up with the movie's others watched at the weekend, the football banter that usually has the office in uproar or maybe what their co-worker's had for lunch! Give people an outlet to share when they have that time and inclination.

This also forms as a nice outlet and sharing tool for recommended reading lists, book reviews, podcasts or other useful resources.

4. Share the wealth with a prize or two!

Create contests – with prizes

To add a little fun to everyone's day, hold a competition, a contest or giveaway. Give the team something to work towards together or even compete for. It could be as light hearted as a photo contest, such as best dressed or funniest pet photo or you may want to start a meme contest for the funniest original meme.

5. Have a virtual team night/breakroom

A team that gathers together...

Particularly if your team is a social, vibrant team, your team are likely missing their weekly team gatherings and their catch ups in and out of the office. With everyone scattered, create a virtual meeting room that people can log into when they want to take their lunch or afternoon break with company, have a 3:00pm call that people can hop onto if they choose to mid-afternoon when that lull hits! This gives people a nice environment to seek out when the lull does strike and they need a friendly face or uplifting voice.

At first glance these tips could be misconstrued as distractions, yet acknowledging the need for the things mentioned above you are encouraging a healthier and happier working environment, which leads to a happier team and a stronger productivity level.

Hope you enjoyed, we'd love to hear your own tips or ways of keeping up with a company culture during this time of crisis!
